Willamette and Deschutes National Forests
The Willamette National Forest stretches for 110 miles along the western slopes of the Cascade Range in western Oregon. It extends from the Mt. Jefferson area east of Salem to the Calapooya Mountains northeast of Roseburg.
The Deschutes National Forest follows the summit of the Cascade Mountains from the Sisters Mountains to the southwest to Mt. Jefferson to the northwest. The Deschutes is distinguished from its western side of the Cascade counterpart mostly by the sunshine which prevails for about 75% of the year (almost 100% of the time in the summer) and by its giant Ponderosa Pine trees, as compared to the towering Douglas Firs and majestic Red Cedars of the wetter Willamette National Forest. The Deschutes Forest mostly surrounds Bend, Oregon where its Forest Headquarters is located.
